Inlay and Overlay

Inlay
and Overlay Clad materials allow precious and non-precious metals or alloys to be metallurgically bonded to a substrate, which can be a single alloy or an overlay clad combination. The inlay stripes are precisely positioned at the location required by your application. Inlays can be placed on one or both sides, at the edge, or at any distance from the edge. When multiple inlays are specified, they can be of different thickness, width and of different materials.

Polymet’s proprietary Controlled Atmosphere (CA) bonding process offers the widest range of overlay and inlay thicknesses available. Overlay clad thickness can be as much as .250” while inlay stripe thicknesses will range from 0.000025” to 90% of the substrate thickness. A wide variety of materials can be bonded to form inlays and overlays, including any precious or non-precious metal combinations.

Inlays & Overlays offer:

• Minimized use of precious metals

• Solid phase bond between substrate and inlay

• Combination of properties not available in a single alloy

• Longer life than electroplated components

• Combinations not available by electroplating
